Teacher Information

My name is Elizabeth Leman Franks. I am originally from Magnolia and have been teaching Spanish for 25 years, including 17 years with Conroe ISD and 3 years with Aransas County ISD. I have taught all levels of Spanish, including AP Spanish Language and Literature. I hold a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from The University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Arts in Modern Languages from Texas A&M in College Station. I have studied abroad in Salamanca, Spain and Quito, Ecuador. I love to watch foreign movies, read, cook, dance, ride horses, and play tennis with my two sons and husband.

I have lived in Montgomery for eleven years. This is my sixth year at Montgomery High and I will be teaching Spanish II, III Advanced, and III Dual Credit.   I am excited about teaching in this beautiful town, in the great state of Texas, and helping make our Foreign Language Department a PREMIER learning center for our children.

It is very important to me that each student in my class has a positive learning experience. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Syllabus - Spanish II with Sra. Franks

Face

Class Goals
Students will strive to achieve level competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking in Spanish.

Mandatory Supplies
Every day please bring the following to class:
three-ring binder (can share with another class)
loose leaf paper
pens (blue or black)
red pen
pencils
highlighter

Optional supplies
ear buds or headphones (on specific days)
electronic device with Internet access (smart phone)
Spanish-English dictionary, only needed if  no internet access available (wordreference.com)
donation of one of the following:
          -box of tissues
          -antibacterial cleaning wipes
          -hand sanitizer gel

Textbook
Así se dice (level II) – This text is available by request from administration, Mrs. Hardy.  We will cover through chapter 5.

Grading
Your six-week grading period average will come from:
40% chapter tests
30% quizzes
20% daily assignments and homework
10% participation (ex. - warm-up calendar and oral points)

Make up work
You have 1 day for every day absent plus one day to complete and turn in work missed.  If you miss a single day that is the day of a test or quiz, always be ready to take it the day you return to school.

Extra credit
Euros are bonus points that may be earned for class participation and in some cases, homework.  Up to 5 euros can be put on most tests.  Euros can only be added to your test grade the day you take the test.  Euros are non-transferable.  Euros are the only opportunity for extra credit.

Retesting
The maximum grade on a retest is 70%.  Students must attend a 30 minute tutorial session before they can retest.   Test may only be retaken once and the best score will be the official grade.  If a student fails due to cheating, the student loses the opportunity to retake that exam.  Retests must be taken within 4 school days after tests are returned, regardless of any absences.  Retest times must be per-arranged. If a student misses the pre-arranged time, then the opportunity for retesting is forfeited. Retesting at the end of the 6 weeks will not change UIL eligibility but will improve your average in the long run. The retest may be different from the original but will cover the same material.

Participation
Participation grades will be based on completion of the warm-up calendar, participation in group and paired activities, and oral points (puntos orales), and other daily activities.  At specified times during the class, students will receive one oral point for raising their hand and answering a question orally.  Don’t be afraid to make mistakes!

Tutorials
Tuesdays, Wednesdays,  and Thursdays            2:45-3:15

Other days and times are available by appointment.  Come with your Spanish materials and specific questions or areas of concern.

Late work
Late work will not be accepted if it has already been corrected in class or returned to students corrected.  Otherwise, it will be accepted up to two class days late with a 20% deduction per day.

How can I improve my grade in this class?
Learning a second language is like learning to play an instrument.
It takes practice, practice, practice. So make a commitment to
practice 15-30 minutes a night. Work your way down the list below.
Don't wait until the day before the test or even worse, the end of the
semester or you will be overwhelmed.  Try the method for chapter mastery I have outlined below. It works.
I have seen very weak students use this method and bring their average
up two letter grades in a month.

1. Practice ALL the different vocabulary activities I have for each chapter in Quizlet.  (See my RESOURCES BY CHAPTER page for links to Quizlet.)  You can also print out pre-made flashcards from this site.

2. Complete the online videos and tutorial practices for the current chapter, from my RESOURCES BY CHAPTER webpage.

3. Participate in class (ask and answer questions).

4. Come to tutorials (T-W-TH after school, or by appointment) with specific questions that have come up during the above practices or from past quizzes.

5. Expose yourself to the language: TV, radio, magazines, heritage speakers, etc.

6. Sign up for my Remind text messages:

7. Frequent the txConnect portal for detailed grade reports.  If you need  your students' access code to register, contact our registrar, Heather Broussard, heather.broussard@misd.org.

8.  Take advantage of the retest policy.

9.  Practice Spanish on fun, free apps like Duolingo and Así lo digo.
