Picture of Ms. Kelly Petty

Hello .. my name is Kelly Petty.

I am the Special Education Inclusion/Resource Teacher at Lone Star Elementary.  I have been teaching since 1991.  Before joining the Lone Star Family I taught in the Arlington, Kerrville and Klein Districts.  I graduated from Baylor University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education majoring in Special Education.

I have two great kids, Davis and Mara.  We have a golden retriever named Chance.  When I am not at school, you will find me at cheering on my kids.

I am looking forward to a great year at Lone Star.  I look forward to learning together, growing together and encouraging one another.

Find just the right book –

Find out which books are "Just Right" for your child. Choosing books which are too difficult makes reading a chore. Books which are too easy, can be boring. Helping you child choose books which are just right gives them the opportunity to develop a love of reading.

Ask the teacher what your child's independent reading level is, as well as which system they are leveled on. (Lexile, Guided Reading, DRA?)

Use the below link and enter your child's level, then search the database for books of interest. The Scholoastic database includes, not only books which are sold by them, but thousands of others. Armed with a list of great titles and authors, you can visit your local library all summer long. offers a convenient app for those on the go.

The next attachment is a letter to parents explaining DRA
Parent Letter

The below attachment correlates DRA levels to others scales used. This can be helpful, if you know a Lexile level, but want to translate that to DRA.
