Coach Hochhauser

***Please see the Remote Learning Tab above for more information regarding the 2020-2021 school year!***

Howdy! My name is Sam Hochhauser. I will be teaching Advanced Algebra 1 and Regular Algebra 1, as well as coaching Golf. The 2020-2021 school year will be my 5th year teaching. I am so excited to be apart of the Lake Creek High School family. I grew up in Montgomery, so I know what a great school and community this is. I attended Montgomery High School and graduated in 2011. Following my graduation from high school, I attended Texas A&M University and graduated in 2015 with a BBA in Finance. I worked for a year in the private sector before realizing that teaching/coaching was my true calling. I went ahead and obtained my teaching certification and never looked back!

To the left is a picture of and my wife and me. She is a Kindergarten teacher at Lincoln Elementary. We got married last November and we couldn't be happier!

I am so excited to be apart of the Pride of Montgomery! Let's make this the best 3rd year ever at LCHS. Go Lions!!

For more information on the topics that will be covered in this class, please view the Advanced Algebra 1 Syllabus

We will have at least 2 major grades and 3 quizzes each six weeks.

The following is the grade breakdown for Advanced Algebra I.

     Major 70%

     Quiz   20%

     Daily  10%

Retesting is a privilege, not a right!  If you score below a 75 on a test, you may retest as long as you meet the following requirements.

  • The test review must be completed prior to the initial test.  This means every question!
  • Attempt all assignments leading up to the initial test.
  • You must go over and correct the original test with me.

Just as the word suggests, you can only retake a test.  Look at retesting as a second chance!

NOTE:  Students in Advanced Algebra I are only allowed to retest once per six weeks.

The following is the grade breakdown for regular Algebra I.

HAVING TROUBLE IN MATH?
1.  ALWAYS use the online resources first.
2.  Ask a friend for help.
3.  Search the Internet for help.
4.  Use the Solution Station posted in my room and on this webpage to assist you.
5.  Come to tutorials!

I will be uploading a blank copy of the notes and assignment for each day on the calendar tab of my website. There is no excuse for not turning in your assignments. In addition to the blank copies, I will also upload a completed copy of notes, and a worked out copy of each assignment. Please use these resources to help you complete your assignments and answer any questions you may have,

LCHS Late Work and Make-Up Work Policy and LCHS Retest Policy.
These school-wide policies are strictly enforced. Please make sure you are familiar with all three.

Please remember that the Internet in general is a resource for you to use in Algebra I.  You can always google topics, search YouTube, FaceTime with friends, etc. for math help.

Khan Academy is a library of helpful videos.  You can use the online version or download the app for your phone.  Since there are so many videos, you will need to read each description carefully. I strongly suggest watching videos that cover our current topic if you are having trouble with a particular concept.

If you are absent, please be sure to collect your make-up work from the Absent Wall in my classroom. You will be provided with a blank copy of the notes and assignment for the day that you missed. It is YOUR responsibility to fill in the notes from either my website, or a neighbor. You may also come in for tutorials before and after school. You will also be responsible for completing and turning in your make-up work.

Please avoid being absent, if at all possible. You will learn much more from being in class.

HOW DO I USE THE ONLINE TEXTBOOK?

1.  Log in.  If your student ID is 12345, then your username is s12345.  The s must be lowercase.  The password is password1.  This is case-sensitive as well.

2.  If this is your first time to log in, then you will need to set up your account.  It's very quick and easy!!!

3.  Click the Pearson Realize tab on the right.

4.  Click the Classes tab at the top.

5.  Click the Homework Helper Accessible Edition on the bottom right.  You might need to scroll down to see it.

6.  Type in the page number at the top.  Either press enter or the Go button.

7.  Click the show/hide TOC (table of contents) if you like.

***This seems a little complicated, but you will quickly get the hang of it!***

A great resource for assistance in math is Khan Academy. I highly recommend this website to all students who need a better understanding of the material we cover in class. There are in-depth videos and practice assignments to help you hone in your skills so that you can be successful in the classroom.

We are scheduled to take the Algebra I STAAR (also called the End of Course exam) at the beginning of May.  Please do not worry about this test.  You will be more than prepared for the day of the test!  If you should want additional STAAR information and/or resources, please visit the MISD homepage and/or TEA STAAR Resources.

Welcome to my 2020-2021 Remote Learning Tab! Here is where you can find most of the information you will need in order to complete our Remote Learning portion of the school year. I know that this is a new challenge for all of us, but let’s be patient with each other and work together to get through this! Please know that I will do my absolute best to guide you through the material. All I ask of you is that you work hard and try your very best.

We will be using Google Classroom as our learning management system throughout the school year. When you login, my Algebra 1 class should already be there for you. If it is not, please email me! The STREAM tab will be used for class announcements and the CLASSWORK tab will be used for your daily assignments/tasks. If you need help with Google Classroom, please see the Google Classroom Cheat Sheet for Students.

Attendance: You will be required to sign in to my Google Classroom each day that you have my class. Your first task will ALWAYS be to complete the Attendance Assignment on the Classwork tab that is assigned for each day. If you do not complete this task, you will be marked ABSENT for that class period. This is a must do!!!!

Calculator: We will be using a free online calculator called Desmos.  Simply go to www.desmos.com (opens external link in new window), and click on the Graphing Calculator button.  If you are unfamiliar with Desmos, don't panic!  I will teach you how to use the calculator throughout the year.

***Please know that when we are in class, we will use the TI-Nspire CX handheld.

I will connect with you through Google Meet.  The link to our class Google Meet meetings will be posted on the STREAM page of our Google Classroom.  We will Google Meet at the beginning of the class period either on Wednesday or Thursday.  This day will alternate for you due to the A/B schedule.  This is not mandatory, but is highly encouraged so that you can get any questions answered!

Gradebook Portal: (Ascender Parent Portal) is the official gradebook.  You will be able to see the grade you made on an assignment in Google Classroom, but MY GRADEBOOK is the OFFICIAL GRADEBOOK.

Email: Most of our correspondence will happen in Google Classroom, but occasionally I may need to email you or you may even need to email me.  Please know you must use your MISD student account.  This is the only account that you will use for school business.  Example:  If your student ID is 12345, then your email is s12345@student.misd.org.  Parents, please make sure the school has your current email address.
